This Is My Family

The discussions the past week on family were very interesting. We all come from different families with different backgrounds. Each unique member creates a unique and special family. By understanding the importance of family we can combat the norms of society.

As we were talking about the walls and boundaries around our families I began to think of my family and my husband and I. I realize that the boundaries changed throughout time. Especially with my relationship to my family members. As I have grown up my connections to my parents has become more clear whereas there was rigid boundary before. The same thing has happened with my siblings. I’ve come to cherish my relationships with them. right now it’s just my husband and I but I know that if we have a strong clear boundary and relationship now then our marriage and future family will be blessed.

Family Theory January 21, 2012

I really enjoyed this past week and leaning about Family theories such as conflict theory, exchange theory, symbolic theory ans systems theory. I really like the systems theory, I think it is a good explanation for many of the issues that go on in the family. The idea that everyone in the family creates subsystems was very interesting to me. Every member of the family contributes and influences the whole with the idea of reciprocity. Also, I thought the idea of unspoken “rules” was very interesting. Something that was also very interesting was about feedback, positive or negative and what each of those mean. I have never thought of the family in the ways that we have been looking at this past week. I can’t wait to learn more!!!!

Hearts January 15, 2012

I really enjoyed Friday’s class discussion. Something that really struck me was the scripture that Brother Williams mentioned.

Malachi 4: 6 reads “And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. ” I have always read this scripture in terms of genealogy work. But i have missed another vital meaning. Parents need to turn their hearts to their children. In today’s society children are often viewed something extra that MIGHT come later in life. There is increasing selfishness in our world today, we see that as adults delay marriage and children to pursue selfish desires. But we have been warned that if we don’t turn ourselves to our children then the earth will be smitten with a curse. The curse is already rampant in today’s society.

I wonder where society’s heart has gone.
